Ephrata, PA is the most populous borough in Lancaster County, with a population of about 13,400. The borough was founded in 1732 and was originally known for both its rich agriculture and its reputation as a “pleasure resort” due to its location near fresh water springs. Today, Ephrata’s downtown area offers an eclectic mix of boutiques, restaurants, hotels, and live entertainment with a small town feel.
Ephrata homes are cozy, affordable, and full of character. Residents can choose to live in town or in the rolling country, taking their pick of single-family homes in the mostly $100,000 to $400,000 range. Sizes and styles range as well, from small cottages to impressive two- and three-story colonials. Many of Ephrata’s homes and buildings are preserved on the National Register of Historic Places, and its countryside is dotted with picturesque covered bridges.
The Ephrata Cloister, originally a religious community that sprang up when the town was founded, now serves as a community center that holds several public events each year. The Ephrata Community Pool is the oldest continuously operating pool in Lancaster County, with new flume slides and climbing walls that were installed in 2012. There also are four area elementary schools, as well as Ephrata Middle School and Ephrata High School.
